Vote for Dan Lungren for the League of Conservation Voters' "Dirty Dozen"

In 2006, The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) defeated 9 of 13 "Dirty Dozen" members of Congress with the worst environmental records. Now for the first time ever, LCV is inviting its supporters to nominate members of Congress to the "Dirty Dozen." A vote for Dan Lungren for the environmental "Dirty Dozen" is one vote he truly deserves.

The Sacramento Bee has accurately described Lungren's environmental record as "abysmal." Lungren has received the following ratings from LCV over his past 3 years in Congress: 2005 -0% ; 2006- 8%; 2007 -8%. The "Republicans for Environmental Protection" give Mr. Lungren a whopping minus 4% rating, subtracting points for Lungren "non votes" on significant environmental issues.

Since returning to Congress in 2004, Lungren has voted:

  • Against H.R. 6, a bill to move the United States toward greater energy independence and security, to increase the production of clean renewable fuels, to protect consumers from price gouging, to increase the energy efficiency of products, buildings, and vehicles, to promote research on and deploy greenhouse gas capture and storage options, and to improve the energy performance of the Federal Government
  • Against an amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill that would ensure that the public has access to information about toxic chemicals released into our air and water
  • Against an amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill that would prevent taxpayers money from being used to build logging roads for private lumber companies in a National Forest
  • Against an amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill that would prevent the EPA from gutting the protections in the Clean Water Act for small streams, wetlands, and ponds
  • Against requiring oil companies to pay fair royalties for drilling on public land
  • In favor of Richard Pombo's bill to allow drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
  • In favor of allowing drilling for oil off the coast of California

But Lungren's abysmal environmental record goes back well beyond the past few years. During Lungren's unsuccessful run for California Governor against Gray Davis in 1998, leading state environmental groups released a report titled, Dan Lungren vs. The Environment: A Failure to Protect and Serve. Lungren's abysmal environmental record at that time included:

  • Dan Lungren, as California State Attorney General
    • Refused to protect public access to the coast.
    • Refused to challenge lethal nuclear waste being shipped through California coastal waters.
    • Cut back prosecution of polluters by 95%
    • Was absent on reauthorizing the state's Toxic Cleanup bill.
    • Supported gutting California's oldest water pollution law.
    • Was the only Attorney General in the country who did not sign a letter requiring federal facilities to comply with hazardous waste laws.
  • Dan Lungren, as Congressman from Long Beach
    • Opposed banning offshore oil drilling
    • Was one of only 11 members to vote against reauthorizing the Clean Water Act.
    • Opposed the public's right to know about releases of dangerous chemicals in their neighborhood.
    • Opposed the public's right to force clean-up of neighborhood toxic waste dumps.
    • Opposed the public's right to sue polluters.
    • Opposed reimbursing victims of toxic exposure for medical and other expenses.
    • Opposed enforcing safe drinking water standards and protecting groundwater supplies.
