Environmental Issues

My family and I are avid backpackers and cross-country skiers. Backpackers have an unwritten rule that you should leave the environment in which you journey in a better condition than you found it. I believe that this same rule should apply to generations of human beings. Global warming, urban sprawl, pollution of our air, water, and soil, and the extinction of other species represent critical threats to our ecosystem, and to the mental and physical health of human beings. As a Congressman, I will work to promote safe, renewable forms of energy; to reduce toxic hazards in our schools, workplaces, and communities; to support sustainable agriculture and forestry; and to preserve parks and wilderness areas.
