Global Warming

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that global warming is occurring, and that the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from our burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to the overheating of our planet. Global warming has potentially devastating near-term and long-term consequences for the health and well-being of humans and other species on Earth, including devastating economic consequences. (I recommend that everyone see the movie or read the book, "An Inconvenient Truth," by Al Gore.) The Bush Administration and my opponent have refused to acknowledge global warming as a real phenomenon, and the United States is the only industrialized country other than Australia that has not ratified the Kyoto treaty, an international agreement to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse gases" that cause global warming. The Bush administration has taken the position that we can't afford to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The fact is, we can't afford not to. As a U.S. Congressman, I will work to foster legislation that results in reductions in the production of greenhouse gases and that stimulates the development of alternative energy sources that do not contribute to global warming.
